We've launched eight custom websites in the first 12 weeks of this year. Ask anyone in this business and they'll tell you we've been busy!
We’re pretty excited about the websites we’ve launched during the first quarter of this year and wanted to share them with you. Each one of these websites has one or more custom features that we developed specifically for that client. One of the benefits of working with so many nonprofits is that some of the custom features we build for one client can be replicated for another, helping us keep our development costs down and making us very productive.
For example, we built a new type of custom dynamic donation form in January for DoveLewis and the staff over at Bradley Angle saw it and loved it, so now they have the same type of donation system in their new site. We also built a custom searchable business listing tool for MercyCorps Northwest in December that was re-worked into a Lost-and-Found pet listings tool for the DoveLewis site.
Community Outreach
The ReBuilding Center
Bradley Angle
Enlace
DoveLewis
MercyCorps Northwest
Steps to Socialization
Private Access
In the next month or so we’ll be launching several more new websites for The Dougy Center, Transformational Voice Institute, Simply Cats and two other projects we can’t tell you about just yet.
One of the things that we’re very proud of at NetRaising is the opportunity to redevelop sites for our long time clients. The Enlace, MercyCorps Northwest and Private Access projects were all for clients that we’ve had for several years whose websites needed to be refreshed with a new design and redevelopment. The new site for The Dougy Center we’re working on is also for an existing client.
We are currently lining up projects for this summer and fall, so if you work for a nonprofit or school that could use a fresh new website, please get in touch now.
During 2009 NetRaising launched a custom dynamic website an average of every 10 business-days. 2010 is off to a good start with 6 new clients coming on board and 2 new sites scheduled for launch in January.
You are invited to take a self-guided tour of of the new websites we’ve launched for these outstanding organizations, schools and businesses in 2009.

Last year a confluence of new ideas, information and opportunity gave rise to a unique project at NetRaising, a website development framework for ExpressionEnigne (EE) we call eeSiteKit.
We launched our first version of the framework back in January of 2009 and within a few weeks there were developers from all over the world putting it to the test. There was a good amount of interest in the project and this generated quite a bit of feedback from its users.
By February we realized that eeSiteKit was selling as many copies in non-English speaking countries as it was here in the USA. This was very exciting for us, but it also made us a little uncomfortable as the whole kit was coded for English websites, and stripping out all of the hard-coded English had to be a nuisance for anyone developing a non-English site. So we began the process of redeveloping the the whole framework so that it was language independent, and as a bonus, would allow for the speedy development of multilingual websites too.
Six months later we had a new version of the software ready for use and we began building websites with it at NetRaising. It then took us about 2 months to fully document the new software and prepare it for launch.
Now we’re building and redeveloping nearly all of our websites using eeSiteKit. We start with an out-of-the-box install of ExpressionEngine, embed eeSiteKit then add great artwork as the perfect complement to the advanced functionality of EE and eeSiteKit.
Our very first class of websites built on eeSiteKit 2.0 will be launching during the next few months at NetRaiisng and we’re excited to be showing them off to the world.
If you would like to learn more about the features and improvements eeSiteKit builds into our new sites, visit the “Features” section over at: eeSiteKit Features.
If you want to see some of the websites built using eeSiteKit, visit the Website Showcase at: eeSiteKit Website Showcase.
NetRaising continues to build websites for some of today’s most successful nonprofits, and now those websites will be just a little bit better.
Protect Your Domain, Beware of Scams
Your domain name is also called your URL/URI or web address and looks something like http://www.YourDomainNameHere.org.
Your domain name is likely registered with an ICANN certified registry and some of them publish your mailing address and the date that your registration expires on their website. Some companies use this information to solicit you.
Unfortunately, there are domain name registries that try to scam organizations into switching to their over-priced service. Five of them are DOMAINRENEWALGROUP.COM Domain Renewal Group (DRG), ICLS.NET (Internet Corporation Listing Service), LNOA.COM (Liberty Names of America) DROA.COM (Domain Registry of America), and DLSCORP.NET (Domain Listing Services). These organizations charge 4 to 5 times the going rate for domain registration services.
These organizations mail you advertising that may appear to be an invoice to renew your registration. Instead, it is really a form to switch to their higher priced service. Please read through any domain name renewal invoices very carefully and avoid being scammed. We’ve not yet head of a legitimate domain registration service that will ever physically mail you a letter for a renewal or call you on the phone about your renewal. The legitimate services email you. So anytime someone calls you to renew your domain, or sends you a letter about it, you should review it carefully. If you have any questions, just give us a call.
NetRaising is proud to announce that we've launched over 100 websites for nonprofits, schools and businesses. We're not sure exactly when it happened, or what site was our 100th launch, but we can now proudly say that we've already launched our first 100 sites.
We knew we were getting close to the 100-launch milestone after we tallied the site launches last year. We’ve been so busy working on new sites though, we lost track of the count. We have about 15 websites in production right now and have a few more lining up in our queue. It’s a pretty exciting time at NetRaising.
All of the sites we build for our clients are based on the wonderful ExpressionEngine CMS. We call it “EE” for short, and it is the workhorse that supports our clients’ dynamic websites. A big thank-you goes out to the team at EllisLab for giving us such great software to work with.
Back in 2001, Kurt Deutscher scribbled a question on a note pad at his desk, “What could happen if someone was cross-trained in nonprofit management and website technology?” We’re not sure if he’s found the answer to that question yet, but he sure has made some progress in the right direction.
Happy 100 Site Launches, NetRaising!

In December, NetRaising's Kurt Deutscher volunteered at a training event in Portland Oregon put on by Meyer Memorial Trust called Communicating in the Age of New Media. Today's session focuses on social networking for nonprofits and is lead by Beth Kanter.
Kurt was facilitating group discussions at this event, and was really impressed with all the great links to social networking resources for nonprofits assembled on the live online Wiki that’s documenting this training.
If you were unable to attend this sold-out training event, you can still see what happened with complete access to all the materials and group input at the wiki, and have the benefit of all these great resources linked to in one place.

On May 31st 2007 The Internal Revenue Service issued an updated warning about phony emails that scare people into believing they are under tax investigation. If clicked, a link in the emails may give scammers access to your computer hard drive. An e-mail claiming to be from IRS Criminal Investigation falsely states that the person is under a criminal probe for submitting a false tax return to a Franchise Tax Board. Opening up an attachment, or clicking on a link to download a file to learn more about the complaint allows those behind the scam to gain remote access to PC computers.
The IRS does not send out unsolicited emails or ask for detailed personal and financial information, including PIN numbers, passwords or other credit card and bank information.
If you should received one of these emails, donot open attachments or click on any links. Instead, forward the e-mails to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
NetRaising received one of these phishing emails on June 7th, 2007.
The email text, shown below (with names and original links to attachments removed) is very official looking. The email address it was sent to at our office is one that was only ever used for an account with the a local Business Journal, so it was sent to a targeted list of business owners and subscribers of the publication.
The person listed as registering the complaint, works at another web services provider, one in Hillsboro Oregon, so we believe that the scam emails are using actual names from a local list. Its likely that some poor person got an email like this claiming that we filled a complaint against them.
This is a very sophisticated scam and we hope you’ll help us get the word out about it to help protect others from it.

Although many of the newer Internet browsers will now update themselves, and/or notify you of updates, not all of them do this, and not every computer allows the automatic updates to take place. From time to time you should check to make sure you’re using the latest version of your favorite browsers.
Not only will the latest browser versions come with fun new features and better security for your computer, they’ll also do a better job of correctly rendering web pages for you.
If you are a PC user, we strongly suggest you update to IE7. Why should I update to IE7?
Also, if you’ve never tried Opera or FireFox, we encourage you to try out one or both of these browsers just to begin to understand how different browsers, even on the same computer, can create subtle differences in the way your web site displays.
As of November 1st, 2007, these are the current versions of some of our favorite browsers.
Macintosh:
3.0.3 Safari (Public Beta)
2.0.0.9 FireFox

PC / Windows:
